Description: I designed, built, and painted this desk from scratch for my friend. I conducted research, created a technical drawing, collaborated with my friend, wrote instructions, calculated the cost, purchased the materials, constructed, painted, and gave my friend a housewarming present.


Concept: When my friend, Amber, moved out of her parents’ house, she realized she needed a desk for her schoolwork, so I offered to build her one. I custom built the desk to best suit the dimensions and layout of her new room as well as her needs for it. The desk is slightly shorter than most desks because Amber is fairly short, so it was most comfortable for her at this height. I wanted to give her extra storage space, by adding wicker basket drawers on the side that matched the light oak stain of some of the furniture in her room. There is an extra shelf on top of the desk which is wide enough for her collection of candles, but narrow enough that her laptop can still fully open without being squished on the desktop. I wanted to give her something special as a design on the shelf backing so I created a unique, but flexible box-like pattern that could accent any design style she fancied in the future.
